They pulled up to the science department building not much later. The drive there had been strange. All the buildings they passed sat in what appeared to be shrouded abandon, while cars lit up the highway. Most vehicles were still running, but a few had run down their charge and sat forgotten on the side of the road. The trip took longer than usual because every intersection had turned into a four-way stop. By the time they arrived, it was the middle of the night, and there was no one around. Everything was quiet and dark. Only a couple street lights, solar relics of the past, were still glowing.

Riya surveyed the building skeptically. “I don’t think your missing admin is going to be here to interview.”

“She probably wasn’t here when they first came by. Maybe we can find a clue to her whereabouts on her desk.”

Riya looked unconvinced but turned to climb the stairs anyway, her handgun pointed at the floor, as she and Finn followed close behind. The doors swung open soundlessly, the locking mechanisms down along with the power. The whole situation was strange in its absurdity. Nothing in their world seemed to function without power.

They used the glow of their flashlights to follow the signs to the staff offices. The admin’s desk sat in the center of an open space with several doors just off it. Laycomb’s name marked the one in the center.

Riya glanced at the desk and then strode toward the door beyond. “I’m going to check out his office. I’m sure it’s been thoroughly checked, but it can’t hurt to look again.”

Finn seemed uninterested in the space entirely as Quinn searched through desk drawers. The woman who worked here—Nathalie Singleton, according to the stationery on the surface—kept an immaculate desk. Rifling through the few contents of Nathalie’s space, she found nothing of interest. She wanted to check the phone and find that number again. She had a downloaded copy of the UNID directory on her data-pad, but the phone line here was dead.

“I need to use the loo,” Finn said, pulling her out of her thoughts.

“Oh, yeah sure. I think I saw a sign around the corner,” she told him.

“Once I’m done, I think we should probably get back. I don’t think there’s anything here.”

He hadn’t even looked, but okay.

“Alright, just one more minute. I want to be sure we haven’t missed anything.”

He shrugged indifferently and turned, disappearing around the dark hallway.

No worries, she’d just had an idea anyway. She unhooked the power cable from Ms. Singleton’s phone, then pulled the retractable cable from her data-pad and slid the connector in. The phone lit up, and Quinn barely suppressed a joyful hurrah. Hitting the Recent Calls button, she tapped down to the records from the day before. The first three digits of the number she’d been looking for slid onto the phone’s screen, and she quickly copied the rest of the number over to her data-pad. She was about to type it into the directory when Riya stepped out of Laycomb’s office.
